Know Yourself – A Practical Guide For ‘ Veteran-Transitioning’

27th June 2016

This blog is written by Sunny Makroo, CEO, Military To Corp-M2C and it draws highlights from a recent talk by him at  Management Development Institute, Gurgaon for AFP (Armed Forces Personnel) Batch – 2016.

If you  know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. -Sun Tzu

This quote above resonates well with my friends from militaries across the world hence I picked it up as this post is about ‘veteran transition’.

This quote is even more relevant – in peace, in war and more importantly in transition. Perhaps a battle which veterans across the world face mostly alone. A battle that doesn’t evoke nationalism, not any media glare and is fought with less or no training.

“And this is a battle that every officer and soldier fights – The only battle which doesn’t come with gallantry awards.”

The series of the posts here will dwell on the subject of transition preparedness and understanding the tool-box that is required for an effective cross over to corporate street.

The first post in this series attempts to answer:

“What do you want in your corporate career and how to get it?”

The first exercise for any military woman or man transitioning from active services should to be to answer the ‘3P‘ of their transition priorities. And these are:

  1. Profile– The kind of career you want?
  2. Place– Which geographic coordinate suits your personal and professional goals?
  3. Package– The compensation that fits with your career aspirations.

Sounds simple – It exactly is. However this is mostly ignored or not contextualised.

The important exercise next is to identify – which of the two Ps are most important and sacrosanct to you and which one you are willing to negotiate on. Based on this selection exercise – you will be able to prepare yourself and take informed decisions regarding your career move.

Here are the combinations and the strategies that you should follow to achieve a career of your choice.

Once you know – what do you want, let’s attempt to answer – how to strategise your career move:

These two simple and underrated exercises will help you answer some of your transition priorities and how to get it. The answers to these will come from a deep understanding of your career preferences and personal aspirations. And when you sit down and dwell on this – you will be astonished that how much you know and how much you need to know for a smooth landing.
